Two Tips for Easy Area Rug Decorating

Area rug decorations are a quick and easy way to dress up any room while adding warmth and depth. Since these versatile floor coverings are becoming more popular with home owners, chances are you’ll find one to fit your decorating budget. These are an excellent and quick way to add color and create focal points in a room. Chances are you have at least one room with a non-carpet flooring material. Tile, laminate, and hardwood floors can be protected from excessive wear and tear with inexpensive area rugs.

There are many things to consider when going shopping for your new rug. The size of the room the rug will be placed is important as well as the room’s current color scheme. This article will focus on these two basics.

Getting the Right Size

The size of the room should dictate the size of the rug you purchase. This is as simple as taking some measurements of the room and having them handy when you go to the shop. A general rule of thumb is to have some exposed floor around the edges of the rug. Simply subtract an appropriate amount, usually two or three feet from the size of the room. If the room has a feature such as a fireplace or closet that makes it irregular have the exposed floor on two parallel side of the rug. Also make sure any inward opening doors have enough room to not interfere with the rug. For living rooms, dens, dining rooms or any social gathering room, large area rugs will be your best bet. The standard largest size is usually 9 x 12 feet and goes down from there. Anything bigger will usually have to be custom made. Again taking good measurements will help to determine what will work and what won’t. For a living room, the best place for a rug is directly under a coffee table. This will have the effect of creating a strong focal point to tie the rest of the seating arrangement together. In dining rooms, it’s important that the rug is big enough to accommodate the table and all the chairs when they’re occupied. That is, all four chair legs should rest on the rug when someone is sitting at the table.

The Right Color Makes All the Difference

Choosing a color and design is a fun part as it’s mostly a matter of personal preference. It’s important to know the room’s current décor so taking a picture of the room with you will be a valuable tool when shopping. You should consider the room’s wall color, as well as the furniture and drapes, if any. The rug can match any or all of the colors in the room. If you want to set the rug apart a little more, find one of the lesser dominant colors and match it to that. Another thing you need to think about is design. If the room already has a lot of design, either in the furniture, drapes, or whatever, a neutral patterned rug won’t overwhelm the space. If the designs are plainer than a lavish rug will make the room really pop. If anything else just remember the basics of color. Lighter colors will make the room seem brighter and bigger, while darker colors will add warmth and texture.
