Outdoor lighting is such a broad and general term in which we lump a myriad of styles of fixtures and types of illumination. There are lights to see where we are walking. There are lights to accent and show off a special part of the garden at night. There are lights just for the patio and porch. There are lanterns for mood and spotlights for effect. In every category there are the infinite types of fixtures. Outdoor flood lights are designed for one purpose: to turn the dark into light.
Outdoor flood lighting makes it possible to continue outdoor activities after dark. We use them when we want to deny the night. We want to finish that tennis or basketball game. We hold a garden party after dark. String lights and lanterns are great for an evening on the patio with friends when we want don’t need much light to see who we’re talking to or where we’re going. Any large public event held outdoors after dark will use outdoor flood lighting in order to assure safety and high visibility. At night, outdoor flood lighting is the best way to ensure proper illumination.
Public events are not the only times outdoor flood lighting is used. Any place where there is a security concern at night can benefit from its use. Outdoor flood lighting is a great tool in home security. Floodlights can be equipped with motion sensors so that they flood the yard with light when movement is detected. The sensors can be adjusted to ignore small animals. Dark driveways are illuminated for added security getting in and out of the car. Although it is not a good idea to leave them on all the time or to expect them to be the sole deterrent to crime, they certainly add a sense of security to any home.
